This week, HMD Global completed the full upgrade of its lineup to Android 9.0. The Nokia 2 was not included in the Android 9 roadmap. The device received its Oreo upgrade a voluntary (and optional) participation. If that wasn’t enough to confirm that the device is not fit enough to take future updates, HMD’s forum administrator has confirmed it for everybody that the Nokia 2 will not be updated to Android Pie.
This puts an end to some of the positive responses from Nokia Mobile’s chat support. There are a few screenshots posted on Nokia Community wherein the support claimed that the Android Pie update for Nokia 2 was in the works. HMD Global likely needs to communicate better with the chat support to ensure that such misleading responses do not happen.
HMD Global has done a commendable job by upgrading nearly 100% of its portfolio to Android 9.0 Pie. Nokia 2 just became an unfortunate case as Google moved budget lineup to Android Go and it isn’t suitable for HMD Global to modify the partition structure and move the Nokia 2 to Android Go via OTA updates.
This, however, isn’t the end of software updates to the Nokia 2. HMD Global will continue to provide monthly security patches to the device to ensure that it remains safe from any security vulnerabilities.
