The year 2017 is over, but the Nokia game has just started. The Nokia 6 (2017), which was the first Android smartphone released by HMD Global, has been crowned the “Most Durable Smartphone” of the year 2017 by Zack. The runners up came as the LG V30, Galaxy Note 8 & the Galaxy S8.
If you do not know Zack, he runs a YouTube channel called JerryRigEverything where he performs durability tests on smartphones and “a few” other electronics. We have shared quite many videos of his tests on Nokia smartphones and you can find them in the archives. You can also head over to Zack’s YouTube channel and watch all the awesome tests he performs on brand new smartphones.
Nokia 6 is built out of metal and gains a quick edge over many other smartphones which use glass for the back panel. Then, Nokia 6 is decently engineered with enough use of metal in the insides. This lets it easily handle bends, being sit upon and even drops. HMD Global has already released an upgrade to last year’s Nokia 6 with the launch of Nokia 6 (2018). We are confident that the Nokia 6 (2018) will carry the good engineering from last year!
On the other hand, the last year’s iPhones – 8 & X, fall flat in the repairability department. Due to Apple’s use of glass back panels which are not individually replaceable, the cost to fix an iPhone with broken glass panel is huge. This leads Zack to conclude that it would be better to buy a new iPhone rather than having the broken back panel replaced.
Here’s hoping that Nokia will keep up the legacy and produce durable and sturdy phones. The competition is certainly moving towards glass back panels and so is Nokia. The Nokia 7 is already out in China with a glass back and the upcoming Nokia 9 is also expected to feature a similar glass built. let’s see if HMD will make a more durable phone than the iPhone 8 and X, which marketing wise use the “Most durable glass on a smartphone” 😅
