HMD Global is licensing the Nokia brand from Nokia Technologies for use on its smartphones and tablets, but there’s barely any information about the company. Here’s all we’ve been able to collect so far:
HMD Global Oy. is a limited liability founded on 09.11.2015 company with c/o AAtso Borenius Oy/J.Syrjänen Eteläesplanadi, 00130 HELSINKI as the registered address (via). The company is said to have 1000 shares valued at EUR 2.5 each.
HMD global is founded to create new generation of Nokia-branded smartphones, feature phones and tablets. So it essentially a dedicated company founded especially for licensing of Nokia brand and not a company which would build a portfolio by licensing and selling devices under different brands. It is created so that the phone business can be kept out of Nokia Corporation which will only be concerned about the royalty payments as per the current status.
HMD has signed a strategic licensing agreement with Nokia Technologies, the advanced technology and licensing unit of Nokia Corporation, giving HMD sole use of the Nokia brand on mobile phones and tablets worldwide for the next decade, and cellular standard essential patent licenses.
HMD will be managed by an experienced group of mobile industry leaders. Arto Nummela, who previously held senior positions with Nokia and is currently the head of Microsoft’s Mobile Devices business for Greater Asia, Middle East and Africa as well as Microsoft’s global Feature Phones business, will serve as CEO on closing of the Microsoft transaction. HMD’s President on closing will be Florian Seiche, currently Senior Vice President for Europe Sales and Marketing at Microsoft Mobile, who previously held leadership roles at Nokia, HTC and other global brands.
