Nokia’s Android One branded smartphones come with a promise of 3 years of security updates. However, for the original Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6 and Nokia 8, such a promise was not made. HMD Global only promised an update cycle of 2 years. Today, something special is happening as HMD announces one year of additional support for the devices.
Nokia Mobile is offering an additional value by deciding to provide quarterly updates in the 3rd year. The fixes included in the quarterly update will include the fixes made available in the previous months, giving you an up to date experience in the third year as well. And for you to know until how long your first-generation smartphone will receive updates, HMD has released the following timelines:
- Nokia 3 – Quarterly updates from September 2019 until September 2020.
- Nokia 5 – Quarterly updates from October 2019 until October 2020.
- Nokia 6 – Quarterly updates from October 2019 until October 2020.
- Nokia 8 – Quarterly updates from October 2019 until October 2020.
The Nokia 2 will be the first device to stop receiving any further updates. The concluding security update to Nokia 2 will be released in November 2019.
Amazon co-branded Nokia 6 sold in the US and India will also see an end of security updates with October 2019 being the last release.
It is nice of HMD to offer support for the original Nokia phones in the 3rd year. It is also nice that users now know when the support for their devices will be dropped.
